Two Louisville Area Nursing Homes Have Poor Care Records

When a family has to make the agonizing decision of placing their loved one in a nursing home, it isn’t a decision that comes lightly. But for many Louisville area residents, nursing homes offer a safe place when a loved one is no longer able to care for themselves. Unfortunately, not all nursing homes are the same and occasionally nursing home abuse occurs.

According to a report from two U.S. Senators, Kentucky is home to six nursing homes with poor care records, including two in the Louisville area.

Families who have loved ones in nursing homes have entrusted these facilities to adequately and safely take care of their loved ones and attend to their every need. Those who have a loved one in a nursing home or are considering placing their loved one in a nursing home should keep in mind some suggestions in order to make sure the facility will be a good fit. First, a family needs to check on what their policy is for families to visit. If a nursing home isn’t open to having family visiting and aren’t transparent then that could be a red flag. Also, it is important to make sure the nursing home is up-to-date with modern care and have friendly staff. Talking to relatives of other residents of the facility can also be a way to understand how the care is at the facility. It can be important to observe what the residents are doing and if they appear to be happy. Visiting the facility can also be a good time to see how long it takes for staff to attend to a resident’s needs and whether there appear to be enough staff in place.

A family who takes the time to visit and thoroughly investigate a nursing home for their loved one is usually able to find a suitable place. But even with the best inspections a nursing home injury can still occur. If a family believes their loved one was the victim of abuse or neglect, they may want to speak with a legal professional who is skilled in nursing home abuse. An attorney can help the family get the answers they deserve as to what happened to their loved one. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, pain and suffering and other damages.

No one expects their loved one will be the victim of nursing home abuse. Unfortunately, many Louisville area families have had to go through this nightmare. It is important to hold nursing homes and their providers accountable for their negligence.
